Serving on the School-Based Health Alliance Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has been such a special experience for me. When I became a founding member of the council more than a year-and-a-half ago, I didn’t know what to expect. Now, as I complete my term in just a few short weeks, I know that this experience helped shape who I am.

Since joining the YAC, I’ve gained an abundance of knowledge about health care reform. My efforts with the School-Based Health Alliance ignited a spark within me to redefine health for young people and bridge the youth-adult gap.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet with members of Congress, discuss the Affordable Care Act with US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and gain a deeper understanding of health issues affecting teenagers. During my term as a YAC member, my role as a young leader was solidified; with support from the School-Based Health Alliance, I was able to cultivate my passion for helping others.

I am so proud to have taken part in this program and contribute to the School-Based Health Alliance’s mission. It has been an empowering experience that I am forever grateful for. I urge all youth who are passionate about school-based health care to apply for the council. Applications for the Youth Advisory Council are being accepted through September 29, 2014.
